Post Modern
Theory
I have gained a lot of
knowledge on Post Modernism and Modernity that I never knew or learned about
before. The information and intake on it really caught my attention and reminded
me of my own experiences and things I go through daily. First off, what is Post
Modernism? Post Modernism is a
general and wide-ranging term that is applied to literature, art, philosophy,
architecture, fiction, and cultural and literary criticism, among others.
Postmodernism is largely a reaction to the assumed certainty of scientific, or
objective, efforts to explain reality. It mainly refers to the cultural products
that differ from modern cultural products. Post Modernism then leads and relates to
Modernity in a lot of ways. The piece written by Anthony Giddens called “The
Consequences of Modernity” caught my attention the most because I can relate it
to my own life and experiences. Giddens mentions how modernity refers to modes
of social life or organization which emerged in Europe from
17th century and then became more or less worldwide in their influence. He
refers how the need for a transition would take us beyond modernity itself. He
talks about the emergence of the new type system which includes the information
society or the consumer society. The things that
stood out to me are how he mentions how modernity has not vanished away but it
has rather been radicalized. He mentions the consequence of globalization on the
modern social world in which globalization results in an increase of network of
interconnections in which extends across the world. Whether it is locally,
culturally or globally; this globalization of network of interconnections
extends worldwide.
What I can relate to Giddens “Consequences of Modernity” work is his
concept and intake on Time-Space Distanciation. It is a transformation of space
and time, whether near or far, this transformation of time and space can be
easily connected. One great example of that is my older Sister that lives in
Puerto Rico. My sister Dina Samara was the closest person to me living in the
city of Chicago. Growing up, she was the one person that I would go to for
advice, have my daily coffee with or spend most of my free time with. However,
about 5 years ago, she got married and had to move away to Puerto Rico with her
husband since that’s where he was working. Realizing that she was no longer by
my side to do those things and activities that I mentioned was the worst feeling
that I could have ever felt at that time. We would call each other and text the
first 3 years, but it wasn’t the same. I still felt so far away from her and I
always wondered how life would be if she was still by my side. However, it got a
little easier for me 2 years ago because our connection got closer. Our
connection got closer because of this amazing technology on the web called
“Skype”. It’s a face to face connection on line where we could talk and see each
other’s face at the same time. We started Skyping more than texting or calling
each other. Skyping made us feel closer to each other since it was a face to
face connection. I would Skype
with her almost every day and it felt like she was by my side more than just
texting or calling her. Then I managed to go to her for advice on Skype whenever
I needed advice. It became a reality how even though she was a thousand miles
away, this world wide connection called “Skype” made us feel closer to each
other. It cured the hurt since it was a face to face connection and felt like
she was by my side at times. There were even days where I would show her my new
outfits or shoes I bought on Skype. It felt like she was right by my side and it
was amazing how closer she felt to me.
Another great example that I could give is my other sister that Lives
only 3 hours away in Indiana. My Other sister, Linda Samara, and I are close as
well but we just tend to text each other only. She doesn’t have Skype, never
downloaded it and has never even used it. She only comes to Chicago every other
month and it takes us sometimes more than 3 months to see each other, even
though she lives only 3 hours away. However, it really amazes me how she lives
closer to me, yet I feel like my other sister Dina is closer to me because of
Skype. “Time and distance becomes emptied of meaning and context”. Even though
Linda is geographically closer to me, she feels and is considered farther away
from me just because of not having that “Skype” connection with her. It’s crazy
how Anthony Giddens relates to my connections with my sisters in a lot of ways
and Skype is the face of that
connection
