Connell writes about a canon that was created through core disciplines that were used to define it, this is where the field of sociology obtained its foundation that we use today. The canon was not an end-all-be-all for the field; it came with problems of its own. Connell explains that it had narrow views for which they were easily applicable to a broad set of ideas. The research that was done between the canon, which included Durkheim, Weber and Marx, was not discussed between each other so there was little communication of ideas and classical contemporary sociology. The canons views were from white, capitalistic men, who did not see the world from different perspectives from different views. Sprague also backs these problems caused by the canon, where he states that these white middle-class capitalists caused problems such as social hierarchy, poor analytic categories and through misguided social theory. Through praxis, we find feminist solutions to these problems, where action and theory come together. Social theorist Chafetz was the one who came up with the feminist theory and the guidelines that make it feminist. These are emphasizing focus on gender, problematic gender relations, not emphasizing gender, and challenging things that may disadvantage women.
An issue that could go along with this feminist theory is the unfair pay that women get from jobs compared to the same work done by men in these fields. This shows gender power inequalities, especially in heterosexual relationships. A stereotype is that women may be inferior in their emotions and are not possibly able to do the same work, or that they are simply inferior to males. This is unfair treatment to women. Social hierarchy has complications in the workforce through males having the more dominant positions over females, or even when the job titles are the same and the two are doing the same amount of work, the women are still getting screwed. Poor analytic categories can be seen through women knowing that they are being mistreated but they do not take action into fixing their situations or that they simply do not care because they are just happy with the thought of working in the same place, but that idea may be a little farfetched. Lastly, social theory is misguided. I believe that this issue is being more sought out and recognized, so I would not say that it is misguided as much, but the fact that this is happening in the first place shows how we as a people can belittle and demean women in such an easy manner.
