With the social theory of canons, we are introduced to the familiarity of the canon that embodies the foundation that great men theorized European modernity. Research done for the cannons came from Marx, Durkheim, and Weber, all in which then came from wealthy, white and capitalistic men. They are what we consider the “masterminds” or “founding fathers of sociology”. According to Connell, global expansion and colonization gave sociology its main conceptual framework, in which much of it relies on data, key problems, and methods. With this being said, the white and powerful men did not see the world from different sociological perspectives or in different ways. The hierarchy of these men and the social and political power they uphold plays a large role on social issues and social inequality today.
An issue and a firm example that I would like to discuss is the control over the reproductive rights of women across the United States. Throughout history, white privileged men have always controlled women’s reproductive rights. Many of these men are in a powerful authority and have publicly addressed this issue, in which many of them are conservative white men. They have set and debated laws about women’s reproductive rights for year. Although these men will never have to carry a child inside of their body, they took the initiative to set laws regarding women and their reproductive rights.
When women’s reproductive rights and social inequality are linked together, we then observe a new form of privilege and set of laws. Although these men control the rights of women’s reproductive systems across the nation, they are also enforcing social inequality amongst women of color (or minorities). Latina and African American women are considered to be “hyper-fertile” and extremely sexually active as opposed to white women, in which these white, wealthy and capitalistic men encourage Latina and African American women to stop reproducing and receive birth control methods that will pertain them from conceiving any more children or expanding their family after a certain amount of children. As far as white women, many of them are encouraged to have more children. With this being said, the reproductive rights of women have been stripped of their individualistic and societal rights. Government and laws control these rights and regulations, majority of which are enforced by capitalistic, white, privileged men.
Many women have come together to fight for reproductive and women’s rights over the last several decades. Back when abortion was illegal, women would shove hangers up their vaginas, in which would cause several health issues and deaths. When women were stripped from their right to obtain an abortion, these were the drastic measures that were taken due to the lack of rights women had. The politics behind abortion branched off of the laws and beliefs of conservative, wealthy, and white American men during the time. Now that women’s reproductive rights have slightly improved over the last few decades, women have more accessibility and more say in their rights. Although this is true, women currently do not uphold as many rights as we should when it comes to our bodies and our reproductive rights. If this social issue continues to be fought by women nation and worldwide, there can be a hope for dramatic change and a fair system of equality for women’s feminist rights and women reproductive rights.
