Critical theory is a theory that says everything we do and have become is solely reliant on the interactions we have with other individuals. The objective world is created through human interactions with each other. Critical theory is based on freeing man and revealing the true potential that we have. We use this realization to bring forth the liberation of people. A couple ways we can see this is through strikes such as the teachers union strike or the graduate students strike this year on campus. I was actually stopped by someone to help join their movement for graduate students and they use this to try and get the general public to be aware of what the problem is and bring awareness to the people above them so they can be treated more fairly and resolve the issues at hand. To make a change and demonstrate awareness these strikes are necessary due to the fact that it raises attention to the general public and allows for their point to get across. A good way to see this is through the movie Argo.
Argo is a movie reenacting the Iran hostage crisis in Iran in 1979. There was an overrun of the US embassy in Iran by Islamist militants promoting the Iranian revolution. The fact that the movie was about how the US tried to get these overran American captives out of the country but rather why the Iranist militants wanted to take over the embassy. They were trying to get their point across to the world of what they are trying to do as a country and the changes they wanted to make. This was a very good idea because you have one of the most powerful nations in the world at your backing call and you may allow for your ideas to spread. This raised awareness around the whole world and the Islamists were successful in their attempt to show the world the revolution that they were constructing. They created their objectivity through the hostages and the human interaction was created.
Critical theories show us the oppression individuals go through in their lifetime. When we look at critical theory for what it is we see human potential and we try to get rid of the oppression that we face throughout our daily lives. Through strikes we show how people may change oppression and look for better opportunities to better themselves and their lives. The Iranian crisis was useful in their attempt to get their ideas spread throughout the world, whether they were just and moral is a different subject but the fact that they could get on the international scene and show people what change is all about. They needed this movement to make changes throughout their nation and the world. If we as a whole succumbed to oppression freely we wouldn’t be free thinkers and there would be no creativity and self worth throughout the population.
