How did classical theory come about and why was it created? Connell discusses how classical theory was created because we wanted one. Its foundation can be traced back to the three theorists of sociology Marx, Weber and Durkheim. Connell discusses the canon in which a canon is described as very limiting and narrow which leaves little room for different perspectives. As described earlier the three theorists are the foundation and though they are well known and well written theorists there is one thing they all have in common; they’re white privileged men. This can create a bias view on things by seeing only one perspective of things. Sprague discusses three problems with social theory: hierarchy of the social, poor analytical categories, and social theory is misguided. Sprague states that social theory is founded by whites where it creates a lack of knowledge to view things from a different perspective. Now a days it is practically necessary to view things from different perspectives it is a great way for understanding things and to challenge what is taught to us.
There are a lot of issues that we often discuss in our everyday lives or in the classroom but often overlook them. One of these issues includes women rights; whether it is in the form of reproductive rights or just equal rights for men and women in the workforce. For this blog I will be focusing on the wages of women within the workplace in relation to the theories described above through Connell and Sprague. Usually people in charge of large corporations are white wealthy capitalistic men, who care nothing for anyone but themselves. Under these white corporate men are its workers both men and women, but are these two getting paid equally? This idea of wages branches out to other issues such as gender and the challenges this bring for women and men.
Women in many work places are paid less than what their male counterparts are paid. Women earn about $0.75 to every dollar a male makes this creates other big issues at hand such as the poverty line for women because of how less they earn compared to guys. What is not fair is women who are earning this type of money when they work just as hard and do the same type of work men do. This shows gender power inequalities. Social hierarchy is shown in the workplace through several factors males getting paid for or holding higher and better positions than the women. Poor analytic categories in this case would be when the “oppressed” groups so in this case the women who are being mistreated do not take any action to fix their situation. The final point in which Sprague discusses how social theory is misleading, well it is. As I stated earlier there are a lot of modern topics that are seen as social inequalities in which there is more than one perspective. As explained above using the three problems Sprague identifies in social theory is just among some of the few issues in our society today.
