Durkheim introduces the idea of the division of labor. This idea leads into anomie. Anomie is the concept that is broken down due to the influence of the social norms that is inflected onto an individual because of the society. He explicitly states that the division of labor is beneficial to society in order to achieve rapid and maximum productivity. Division of labor functions creates solitary, efficiency, and fulfills needs. This concept is the idea can be seen as a task broken down into multiple roles until the task is completed. With this, you are depending on the person to complete the task in order for you to complete your task while others are depending on you to complete the task as well. It’s a cycle that individual’s are depending on each other in order to complete the task. We can view this concept into two types of social solidarity: mechanical and organic.
Mechanical solidarity is connecting individuals closely amongst each other through the idea of sameness. Everyone in this society have the same beliefs and view through collective conscious. In this society, there is a low division of labor that makes individuals play multiple roles in the society. A person can be the town’s butcher as well as the town’s clerk. They also are less populated hence individuals playing multiple roles. There focus is key on community because that’s the foundation that is embedded into their society. There is a social interactions base on relationships built so everyone is on good terms with one another because they have to be.
While organic solidarity is the difference of the individuals that makes them come together. Since it is that individual’s specialty, you would seek that person for help. In this society, there is a greater division of labor so people don’t have to have multiple jobs and can focus on one since that is what they are good at. But the community is less personal since everyone is focus on himself or herself. People’s relationships are based on status/roles and interdependence is essential.
According to an article posted on Bangkok Post, we can see an example of mechanical solidarity. In this concept we see that as a community, as a whole is strong and dependent on one another. We can see the community as a bubble and everyone in the bubble is on the same track while everyone else outside of the bubble has a different mind set. In this article, a monk made a Facebook complaint about a police blockade that affected the community. The police are barricading outside of Wat Benchamabopit, a temple that currently has over 200 people residing there and the majority of them are monks. This barricade serves a blockage from the outside community aside from the temple and the monks are furious about this situation. Blocking the temple from the outside world leaves no room for monks to do their duties outside of the temple. It would enable them from allowing travelers to come in the temple as well as monks leaving the temple. The monks are a group of people that practice religion and function in society differently from others. One of the things that make them differ from the rest of the society is their appearance. Monks have shaved heads along with their attire are robes that are usually donated or purchase and they don’t wear shoes. Imagine if a monk was walking down the street and everyone would bewilder because in society that is not a typical look that a person would appear. But in the temple, that is their typical look. They are only as strong as they work together to complete their task. In the temple, they have multiple duties such as cooking, cleaning, etc. They always want to make the temple look clean and neat so they depend on one other to complete their daily task of mopping, sweeping, and etc. If a person does not sweep, the nest person would not be able to mop because there are still dirt on the floor. Like Durheim’s theory of division of labor, the monks are relying upon each other to complete their daily task in order to maintain their goal in having the temple clean. Based on the article, we can see that the monk community is strong while with one another because they are supporting each other on the decision being made. If a member is very passionate about an issue, the whole community will support that individual.
