Foucalt is a French philosopher that gave more focus and concentration on panoptic. Panoptic is known as the power room. In other words, you can relate this as a control room. Since you know that someone is watching you, you try to discipline yourself. There is someone watching over and you can’t help but to stop yourself from doing certain things so that you wouldn’t get caught in a bad situation. There are 3 different powers to panoptic: enclose, deprive of light, and hide it’s “power.” This idea of hide power is unspoken. People are aware that there is a watcher but yet no one speaks of it and allows for the watcher to gain this power over them.
An example that was used to describe this control room is a prison. In a prison, there are guards and prisoners. They are acting a certain ways since the prison is under surveillance. There is someone watching over the camera and it forces for the prisoners to be discipline. They would try to avoid any trouble or fights with one another because there will be consequences if it does happen so they try to behave themselves.
To compare this example, we can think of an interrogation room. An interrogation room serves a special purpose to obtain information from a subject. The design of the room is however really unique. There is a table and chairs in the room or sometimes-even cabinets. A special feature however that is quite visible is a mirror. This is not just an ordinary mirror. On one side could see your own reflection but compared to the other side not only are unable to see your reflection, you can see the activities that are occurring in the opposite room. This room is design to help cops or detectives to obtain information from many subjects in order to save a case. The interrogation room is not only under surveillance camera; there is also another pair/set of eyes looking into the room as there is a process being undergone.
A clip that I attached for my blog is from a famous television show called “Pretty Little Liars.” I will not go, as much in depth with what the show is about but it is a suspense and mystery show. Basically there are 4 girls who have a dead friend and no one really knows the story behind her death. Since no one is uncertain about the girl’s death, everyone would be in questioning because anyone could have potentially killed the girl. Even though there is no evidence pinpointing the 4 girls, they are always caught in a bad scene and brought in for questioning in the interrogation room. With that being said, we can see that the girls are acting a certain way when they are in the room. They would refuse to answer certain questions because they know that someone is watching as well as cameras are on them. The purpose of the interrogation room is to get information from the subject. It is to see if any of the subjects will turn their back on one another when they get their one on one interrogation.
In this particular clip, they just got caught up in a bad scene and had to end up at the police station. Usually in an interrogation room each person would have their own time and get interrogated but in this scene, all the girls were in the same room. Since the cops did this, the girls would know exactly what to say and make sure to not get their stories mixed up. Of course the girls don’t want to accidently slip up information that’s shouldn’t be heard because they are under watch. This is the power that panoptic has on an individual or group. Since they are under watch, they will act a certain way and be discipline. They don’t want to accidently go out of line or else there will be consequences. This show overall does makes the girls act in a specific way everyday as well because they are being closely watched by the authorities.
