Marx talks about the four types of alienation that a worker experiences. There is alienation from the process of work; the individual’s work is no longer a part of them. There is alienation from the object of production; for example, the individuals who made a product cannot afford it themselves. There is alienation from other workers and capitalists. In regards to the capitalist or their boss, they exploit the worker and have some sort of superiority over them and are in control of them. Then the separation from other workers is due to the fact that the workers are in competition with each other. And finally there is the alienation from species being, so man is alienated from what it means to be man, the need and desire to create something. With all these different types of alienation, the labor is forced, and the workplace is hostile.
In the video clip from a 60 Minutes documentary “March of the Machines”, it is shown how the workplace has become filled with machines. When looking at the workforce in the factory it is quite apparent that there are not that many human workers and a large amount of robotic workers. Unlike during the Industrial Revolution not many people are needed to help run these machines, so this type of worker is becoming obsolete. In the video the alienation from work is shown because now work is further removed from the product, in other words instead of someone having to actually move all the shelves and products around, the machines are doing it. And the workers that are left there to do work have monotonous and mundane tasks. There is also the alienation from other workers, so because there are not as many workers needed there is more competition for the small amount of jobs that are available. Also not only do these workers have to compete with other workers, they must compete with other robots.
So in this clip the predominant type of alienation of occurring would be alienation from work. In the video only a few amount of people are left working in the factory. The workers that have not been replaced by machines and are left are doing work that they do not enjoy. And what seems to be the case is that jobs that do not take as much skill are being replaced by robots. So what is seen here is those that do not have as much education are the ones suffering from this new era of technology. So the workers that were already being exploited for their cheap labor are now in a different position. They are jobless so the wages that they were making they no longer have. With all the new technology and less and less need for average skilled workers, the capitalist/bourgeoisie is now profiting even more, but at the other end the proletariat no longer have a way to survive. Although the capitalists were exploiting them, the proletariat were able to make wages and sustain themselves through their labor power.
There is an interesting shift that seems to be coming about in the new era of technology. The proletariat becomes even more desperate to work, even if it is exploitive. But the difference from before is that they are no longer even being replaced by other humans and there is no work for them, so there are even more people left jobless than before. The only people that remain employed are those capable of making new and better robots. Here is a type of way there is alienation from others. Higher skilled workers are in competition with lower skilled workers – they are the ones creating the machines to replace them. The replacement of workers by machines continues to negatively affect the proletariat.
