Labor is known to be a commodity that takes place on a daily basis. According to Karl Marx, alienation is divided into four sections under capitalism: process of work, product of work, alienation from other people, and alienation from the species being. Process of work is where an individual works repetitively with no interest. The second one is product of work meaning whatever an individual establishes and produces is not their asset. The third one alienation from other people means that an individual is not pleased with the people they occupy their time and space with. Lastly, alienation from the species being means that an individual or workers in general who are independent beings lose control of their own lives and is separated from his or her personal life activities, in other words, alienation from human nature.
The famous Apple Inc, formerly Apple Computer, Inc is a great example of this notion by Karl Marx. Apple products are very unique and they have altered technology like no other. However, there are many flaws that come along with it. These flaws were brought to light these past few years after the recent news of workers committing suicide at Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group. The reason for this is because several proletariats in China were poorly paid and were treated unfairly. Not only that, but there underage children were working at the supplied unlawfully by an employment agency.
From both the readings and the social issue article I have read about the Apple Inc, I believe that just as Karl Marx describes, whatever you buy or sell with use value is commodity. Most of all the underage and overtime proletariats at the suppliers were alienated in all four forms. One of the main reasons for this is simply because they had no choice and had to settle for whatever that was given to them as an agreement in order to make money. Not only were they species being, but also they were also trying to adapt and life upon being alienated without any option.
In conclusion, I would say that Karl Marx’s concept and notion of alienation in a capitalist formed civilization surprisingly or not surprisingly still exists. Regardless of how the proletariats may or may not feel, the employment is obligatory in order to make earnings and profit. One way to solve this situation is to give each and every proletariat equal rights, however, that is not possible since not everyone has the same qualifications or the same educational backgrounds. Hence, it is hard to narrow who is qualified for what. All the products made in Apple including the iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macbooks, and etc are still advancing, capitalists are benefiting more regardless of all the advantage they take from the workers. The only way to fix this kind of problem is if the waged people stand their common ground, they can then make a difference. So until then we will still sadly be living in a capitalist world.
