Micro sociology is an agency in a world system. In this system meaning and order is created through peoples interactions in society. Microsociology has three elements and they are: emphasis on face to face interaction (focuses on meaning), meaning and not a function (focuses on intersubjectively/ in other words we create the world that we live in and not the other way around), and the third element is lived experiences, so what the people have gone through in the world shapes this microsociology system. Also microsociology had three parts to it as well. The first part is phenomenology, and that is the people living in that space and time. They experperience sensory knowledge through touching, feeling, smelling, etc. The second part is, symbolic interactionism and that is studying people through interactions with words and gestures. The third part of micro sociology is ethnomethodology, and that is people living their lives every day and coming into contact with new challenges and interactions. Micro sociology also talks about how our reality is different then what our knowledge is. Even though they both are socially constructed, reality is the outside force that exist such as race and gender, and not everyone experiences the same reality since there are multiple. Knowledge on the other hand is based on our inside force, such as some people might believe that a tooth fairy exists. This knowledge is only true if it is shared between individuals. Norms are meant to be broken at times, it can lead to positive effects but mostly it has negative consequences.
Micro sociology explains the risks and effects of breaking our everyday norms in our society. Many of us have went to a fancy restaurant in which the waiter sat us down and we find that normal. Even if some of us just go to a fast food place such as Burger King or even Taco bell, the norm is to order our food, wait for it, then either sit down and eat it with friends or alone and go back on with your day, the waiters and cashiers are nice and don’t make remarks against you. But, there are two fast food places in which they break the norms, the first place is Ed Debevics and Wiener Circle. These two places are not what we would expect when we go to get a meal. My first time going to Wiener Circle was, this past summer with friends while on my motorcycle. When I went in, the employees started making rude verbal remarks such as, “Oh you guys came on a motorcycle and no girls…such ******….. Just Order your ****** Food”). I was surprised at how they talked to us. My friends just started laughing, and I was in shock, I never knew of a place where they spoke badly to their customers. I always experienced food places to be nice and caring towards their customers. Our social norm when we go out to a place to eat with friends or family is to have a nice and peaceful meal, I never expected someone to curse at me while ordering my food.
The second place where I found food places to be breaking the social norm is, Ed Debevic’s in the downtown area of Chicago. This also happened this past summer, after the beach, some friends and I decided to go get food at this place since we heard they had good burgers. When went in, they sat us down and everything was like a normal restaurant for a while. While waiting for our food, the employees just started dancing on the countertops and throwing napkins and other items around, again I was shocked. When the lady brought us our food, she just threw down our plates and made some rude remarks. I just thought she was having a bad day or something, but then I noticed that every waiter was treating their table rudely. So I decided to Google this place, and make awful reviews on it, until I saw the comments. I noticed that this was a normal thing at thing place, and that many families come out of state with their kids just to experience the awful service and the entertainment.
Microsociology mainly is about the interactions that people have that create the meaning and order that we have in society. Without these norms our society would be a free for all, and everyone could do whatever they want. Many of us have a visual of how a food place should go about, and the customer service that should be received from these places. But, in the past year as I mentioned above I experienced two restaurants/ fast food places that broke the norm of a dining place. These two places brake the norm because of the treatment they give their customers such as rude verbal remarks, yelling at them, the workers acting as kids because they would dance on countertops and by throwing things around.
