My Breech Experience!
Micro Sociology is a term that I have never learned or heard about until
recently. After finding out that Micro Sociologists mainly focus on individual
actions and react and act on others, it caught my attention right away. I was
fully interested and wanted to learn even more about Micro Sociology. The reason
being is I can relate it to my life every day, I can relate it to a lot of
experiences in life that I’ve had, or experiences where I’ve witnessed other
people’s actions and judge them based on their actions. In my opinion, based on
my knowledge and what I have learned throughout my whole life, we usually
observe people and judge them more than we know or realize. We watch and
observe individuals actions on a daily basis whether we are at school, a coffee
place, the mall etc. We observe their actions, their behavior, interactions
with others, etc. We act differently to individuals actions and it all depends
on the situation. For example, I go to school at UIC and observe the
individuals in my classes. I observe their actions and behavior without even
realizing that I do. However, I have days where I wonder how I would react if a
classmate did something unlikely like standing up in front of the class and
yelling something out loud that had nothing to do with the course. I’ve decided
to do my own experience known as the “breach experience”. Why not try it on my
own and see how individuals act to my behavior and actions?
What better then to try this experience at downtown Chicago where it’s
always busy, especially in the mornings? I’ve decided to try this experience at
my favorite coffee and latte place, Starbucks. Mondays are my longest days at
UIC so I always have to go to Starbucks and get my order of a large white mocha
coffee with 2 espresso shots. Every Mondays at 8 am I go in and it’s always
busy. Sometimes the line is out the door. I usually go in, pay with credit/debit
because it’s the fastest way and leave right away. Everyone is always in a
hurry because they either have to go to school, work or catch the bus/train. I
decided to go on Monday, October 22 at 8 am and pay with ALL CHANGE instead of
a credit/debit card. Do you know how long it would take to pay with change,
especially when it’s only dimes, nickels and pennies? My order usually ends up
being around 5 bucks, so why not pay it all in change? I wanted to try it and
see how these individuals at Starbucks would react, especially knowing they are
in a hurry. I go in on Monday and I’m watching as everyone is paying quickly
with either cash or credit. I waited about 2 minutes then I was next up in line.
The guy behind the cashier took my order. He then told me that my order came up
to about $5.35. I look back and there are like 15 people waiting to order. I
took a pouch full of change and just spread it all on the counter. I look at the
employee and he just stares at me with the most surprised look ever. Then I
start counting the change. I stack up about 40 nickels, 20 dimes and the 35
cents in pennies to make it $5.35 As I start stacking them up, I hear
sighs and look back and most of the people in line are just staring at me with
the dirtiest look ever. I hear the guy in the back of me say “are you kidding
me”? Instead of taking only 40 seconds, my whole order took me about 2 minutes
exactly. I heard a female yell “why is she taking so long!” The employee kept
giving me a dirty look and kept sighing with disgust, so was the guy behind me
in line, and almost every individual in line. I can hear sighs, bickering and
whispering. I knew they were all talking bad about me and probably wanted to
punch me. I could feel my heart beating and my face was really red. I was
finally done counting my change, paid my order and went on the side counter to
receive my order. I look at people in line and sitting down, at least 60% of
them were just staring at me. Then I take my order, leave and everything went
back to normal.
I decided to try this experience because no individual pays with all
change like that, especially in the mornings at downtown Chicago when everyone
is in a hurry. I wanted to try something different and relate it to Micro
Sociology. Every individual almost re acted the same in Starbucks; meaning most
of them were just “staring” with disgust. This was one of the best experiences
ever because it was just real funny, embarrassing and different. However, as I
left and I started drinking my coffee and thought it was all over, I remembered
something. I go to that specific location every Monday and most of the workers
know me, why didn’t I go to a different location!?
