Francis Berry, Tonic Moment: Cornucopia 2003
Postmodernism is the result of questioning the scientific and objective ways many have found to explain reality. It argues that there is no absolute truth and that the way people perceive the world is subjective. There is an emphasis on finding multiple truths given that societies are made up of multiple voices each speaking about a different experience. Each individual has their own reality of the world based on their language, culture, race, ethnicity, sex, gender, class, and economic status among others. According to Featherstone, postmodernism can largely be seen through art, architecture, music, film, drama, and fiction. Through these various ways, a change or transition was seen in many aspects of society and therefore postmodern became a new historical epoch with new cultural products and ways of thinking.
In societies, individuals interpret the world in a unique way given that postmodernism focuses on the idea of multiple realities. A way in which many interpreted their world was through art. A difference between modern art and postmodern art was recognized. Modern art was a mediator for political views, political movements and social change in the twentieth century. During the postmodern time period, artists moved away from any type of ideology. Postmodernism artists produce art work that demonstrates their individual interpretations, their experiences, and their thoughts about the world instead of showing an absolute interpretation of the world. Postmodern art values the individual and personal interpretations of the people, therefore allowing them to find their own meaning and interpretation of the work.
A well know postmodern artist is Francis Berry. His art work emphasizes the emotional dimensions of things rather than their objective appearance to show an amplified sense of self-conscious subjectivity (http://francisberry.com/artist/biography.html). His art work consists of “Blurred cultural boundaries surface in surrealistic, cubist, funk, and folk amalgamations setting each other off against rich color passages. On the surface, Berry's work is accessible, humorous, and lush. Deeper, one can feel an undercurrent of critical consciousness and spiritual aspiration”. Using this style allows his artwork to be open to interpretations by the people. Tonic Moment: Cornucopia is one of the examples in his collection of paintings.
One of Bauman’s arguments is that during the postmodern times there is a sense of ambivalence and ambiguity. Our experiences produce simultaneous conflicting emotions and interpretations of the world and sometimes artists are able to depict this in their work. This demonstrates that postmodernism focuses in the idea that there is uncertainty in the world, that nothing is absolute and therefore people experience a great variety of realities
