Post-modernism involves cultural differences in products after the modern era. It is a new way of looking at situations that were seen differently under the modern rules. Post modernism, unlike modernity, does not see a place for categories and dualism. There is more of an open frame of mind in viewing the world. There is focus on people’s experiences rather than the general structures that come standard. This also brings about a perspective of the world that isn’t the utopia that many would imagine their world to be. Because there are many different ways to see the world instead of just one way or another, post-modernism allows for many interpretations and truths as opposed to one interpretation or truth. Giddens explained that there is a disconnection to reality that is being experienced. Trust comes in the form of abstract systems where we believe the expert to have the proper information such as calling an insurance agent when issues arise regarding coverage. Sometimes technological advances allow for two people to talk to one another via text message for example, even if they are in the same house. This allows them to have the amount of contact that they are comfortable with as Giddens explains. Post-modernity also allows present day Indian brides to reap the benefits of technological advances.
After Indian women would get married many years ago, they would have very little contact with their family members as they were meant to go live with their husband and his family. Many times they would move from their village to another village where their husband lives which can be hundreds of mile away. Often many girls have married and then immigrated to countries like America with their husbands leaving their families behind. The ability for contact and interaction is limited even if they wanted to get in touch with them. As Giddens mentions about change being time space distanciation, there are much easier modes for these new brides to connect with their maternal and paternal family members. Technology allows for this to happen. The same technology that allows two people to text one another while being in the same house also allows a new bride to connect with her family thousands of miles away and share what she thinks of her new world along with getting tid bits of information about the land that she used to call home.
With technology being so advanced, there is even more ways to have time space distanciation being felt. With Skype and instant messaging, there are webcams that allow those that never have stepped foot in a country to see in real time what is happening. There is also a microphone that gives more voice than any ordinary phone conversation. With the ability to have a disconnect with reality around them, a newlywed couple embarking on a new journey halfway across the world still is able to call home and hear and see the sweet nuances that bring their minds at ease. There is a notion that the change that is occurring is to their advantage just like the texting twosome in the same house.
