After reading The Promise by C. Wright Mills and Uses and Pleasures by Lemert, I know realize that social theorist are every where and can be performed by anyone. The one thing everyone doesn't know that anyone can be a social theorist, you don't need a fancy letter or title to become a social theorist. If you notice a problem and have a solution to it or find a way to solve it, then ultimately, you are social theorist. Social theory is all about problems and solutions. Recognizing problems can thus express how we think, and the way we think. Thus, Lemert expresses how we should acknowledge our surroundings and by doing so we can engage with our peers and find out more about them and open our minds to more solutions. Discovering why people are the way they are, recognizing their back grounds to seek solutions to their actions such as crimes or not committing to an order.
One way to look at it is in the writing of Mills in the Promise. He expresses having person problems verses public problems. Person problems, meaning, that you have a problem that effects you and only you, a problem that solely effects only one person. Example would be when you don't study for a test the that you already knew was coming and failing it. The grade only effects you and no one else. A public problem would be shooting at a college, someone comes into a class room, a common area, where the killer thus, takes out his gun and suddenly shoots a student. Such events, like mass murders, only effects a group of people. Mills defines this as a way to determine different problems and also separating them into different parts. Thus this can create a more define problem and then finding a better faster way to solve the problem.
Lemert also expresses that "Our ability to endure, and on occasion, to enjoy, the worlds for rational lunch-lines rules, of crack wars in the hallways, of clean airplane restrooms and much more depends on our knowing something about why things are as they are" (Lemert, 2). This is basically saying that when we experience an event that occurs in life we acknowledge our surroundings. With that said, maybe if we did notice more of our surrounding our peers, maybe would could prevent horrific events from happening, period. IF we took the time to recognize our peers, our surroundings, we can then understand how murders, kill people, or why those who choose to commit a crime, actually commit the crime. Maybe from that we can restore their manners to realize what is wrong from right again. Many believe that knowledge is power and with that power can come great things. Such as helping out one that is lost or disguised from the real world.
This task maybe hard but that's what social theorist do everyday, thats what their job entitles. Making hypothesis' from real life experiences and finding a solution to them. This may seem hard, but in reality, it's fairly easy and most people might not notice, we do it every day. For example, you see a homeless person on the street, they have a stern, worried face, wondering how and when their next meal will be. You feel a sudden guilty, as you munch down on a subway sandwich. You wanna help, thinking of ways to feed the need. So you don't finish your sandwich and give the rest to that homeless person. Right there, you solved a problem. A public problem where the public seems to ignore the poor and spends their earnings on more guilty pleasures.
