Romantic Relationships
Max Weber is one of the main theorist to introduce the concept of social action. To Weber, social action is a behavior carried out by an individual which has an attached meaning and that behavior is directed towards an individual. Verstehen one of the main concepts developed by Weber is the idea that we need to come to an understanding and interpretation of these observable events and actions. Social action and verstehen work together and are understood more in-depth when an observed behavior can be explained and understood. Romantic relationships are a good example of social action and verstehen. They are a behavior with meaning and can come to be understood through personal experience.
Romantic relationships are a major element to the lives of many individuals. They can take on the face any interaction that has been made with a person. They can form from a friendship, rekindle with an old crush, or you can simply just fall in love at first sight. However you experience your romantic relationship we know that no matter the circumstances under which two people became involved they experience some kind of social action. Where one individual woos the other with the objective of impressing that person so, that there attempt at love would be corresponded to. Yet, as we know, relationships do not always end happily ever after.
When in love people tend to blame the heart for their irrational actions. Weber, I believe would agree that the reasons the relationship fails is because people are not thinking rationally, they are not thinking realistically. At this point one of the two individuals in the relationship is more emotionally involved forgetting what the purpose of the relationship is, whatever their purpose maybe. Weber refers to these emotional impulses as affective action.
Our expectations are sometimes greater than reality and in attempts to make things work we get blinded by reality. This leaves a recurring story line of pain and hurt, that seems unexplainable at the time but at the end of the relationships it all seems clear. At this point you experience what Webber called Verstehen. You come to an understanding of the events that went wrong in your relationship and in order to make the best out of the next relationships you must understand how the relationship got to that critical point.
We most certainly know that a relationship is not long lived in a state of ecstasy. We seem to hear this every day. On the radio we hear a song about a man or woman try to forget the person they once loved but its so painful even though they know they are complete opposites. You have people who listen to these songs and sing them so full heartedly because they feel as if they have lived every word that is being sung.
Romantic relationships come from a traditional behavior. The reasons why a partner is seeks another may vary but what will not change is that romantic relationships have meaning and involve two people. Romantic relationships can be explained through the intentions one person has with the other, yet, the outcome of that relationship cannot always be explained. Romantic relationships are a phenomenon that must be lived in order to learn and be understood. The errors made in order to make the following one prosperous. This is one way a person can fully understand the social phenomenon of romantic relationships, thus achieving what Weber called vertehen, the understanding of actions.
