We live in a society where power manipulates situations and can determine what path our futures lie on. In this society we also have social norms that are placed into the minds of people from the moment we are born. Weber talked about domination, discipline, and power. Each of these has a connection to one another, but very unique in their own way. Domination, when one finds a community that will be obedient to any command given; power, someone having the ability to make their own decisions; and discipline, a community obeys commands without thinking about the situation at hand. With these also comes traditional, charismatic, and rational authority. When looking at this picture one automatically assumes that it is two different people a male and a female. However, these very different physical appearances are the same person. The next question I would ask is who is the “real” person, the male or the female? This person has power over his/herself in a world that will not accept how he/she physically expresses his/herself.
Although society has many different kinds of physical appearances now the social norm is male or female. Society (laws/rules) is the domination and with these rules/laws comes social norms that are placed into the minds of society. Social norms are seen as what is the proper way of living and anything outside of these social norms is not ordinary. This would be a part of Weber’s theory on traditional authority; social norms make families, culture, religion, etc. having to be a certain way of living. In relates to this photo, he/she is going against the social norms of how society thinks; that a person can only be male or female. Before I stated that this was the same person, many people would believe that the images are two completely different people. The person in the photo has complete control on how society views his/her physical appearance. Weber explains that people should have control of their own power, but with social norms people make decisions without thinking (discipline). Because social norms have been around for such a long time it is a form of discipline in the minds of people without having to do any teaching.
How can someone be able to live life as both a male and a female? Is it even possible? From the looks of these images it is possible, but how do you know that I am telling the truth about this being the same person. Am I just saying all of this because I want you to believe that this is the same person living two different lives in one? Right now I have the power over you because I know the truth behind these images and I want you to believe what I believe. This being a blog I have a community of people, readers, which I am targeting and want you to believe what I am saying.
Weber also talks about talks about status honor, “In content, status honor is normally expressed by the fact that above all else a specific style of life can be expected from all those who belong to the circle.” What is this life style that Weber speaks of? Can it be that everyone must be either male or female because being outside of these two makes a person outside of the ordinary or cannot have “status honor?” Honor, when someone receives respect from others or has high rankings. When looking at this picture, does he/she display any type of honor? If a male wants to be a female or female wants to be a male can they receive status honor from society? The real question is why not because if I did not tell you that these two images were the same person no one would have been able to tell. Just because HE lives his life outside of the social norms that society has and still has his power over his life why can’t he receive honor because society says so?
**This is in fact the same person. He was born a male but does a fabulous job when he changes his physical appearance to a female.
