Weber was a German economist and sociologist who came from a wealthy family. Weber was outstanding by the work he produced about the comparison of Capitalism and Protestantism and for bureaucracy. He described rationality as an iron cage of formally rational structures. Weber defined social action as a form of understanding behavior. He stated that from power there were three different kind of legitimate authority. Weber believed that individuals grew up to be who they were in society due to their life chances. Whereas, Marx believed that in a society there always ought to be a worker and an owner. As of bureaucracy, he believed that the more technology the less use of human which leads to men and women doing less mistakes. Once bureaucracy exists, it is unable to dissolve, in other words just because a police man gets fired the station is not closed down. These of course were pieces of his knowledge yet, there are many more. This paper will focus on how he explained power.
Power according to Weber is being able to impose one’s will in face to opposition. In other words, when an individual says, “I make a rule and you follow it”. Through the picture found at the bottom, I explain how power is produce using a hydro turbine. In this model the water is the power to produce electricity. This is so in the way that without the water no electricity is produced. The domination in this case as Weber explains is when a group of people obey your will. For example, in this model the turbine blades, the wicket gate, shaft, rotor and stator might hate their job to produce electricity commanded by water. Yet, they have no option to not do it, they must do it. Authority then is the legitimacy to domination allowing a sense of authority. For example, the water gives the workers the job to help it produce energy because water running alone is unable to produce electricity. Therefore, the workers, in other words the turbine blades, wicket gate, shaft, rotor and stator must produce electricity along due to the command by water. The discipline then is a trained group following orders, the water then flows through a certain way, and it is worked through by its workers to produce electricity. The workers have a specific order of how they must introduce their work for the product to be published. The water can’t just go and twist around by the help of the turbine blades and produce water. The power must first train its helpers that one goes first, and then second, and so on in order for the product to be outstanding and produce its invention.
Power is also defined in Gerth and Mills writing of Weber, where they explain how it is found in bureaucracy. Gerth and Mills argue that the power position of a fully developed bureaucracy is always over towering. In other words, most of the time an individual’s position in office is there due to privilege rather than the election of the people. In this particular model that I present the model was an idea of an individual and his intelligence, the model was not put into the field because the people actually sat and voted for it to be used so that they were able to get energy. It is through this lens that I define this theory given by Weber.
To conclude, Weber shares his knowledge of power and how connected to power, domination, authority, and discipline must form within power in order for the solution to occur. I provide an illustration of what he means in his theory of power, and how through power production is released. Identifying as well how power is completely developed through bureaucracy and at times it is over towering.
