According to Bourdieu, social capital is the aggregate of the actual or potential resources, which are linked to possession of a durable network of more or less institutionalized relationships of mutual acquaintance or recognition. In other words, social capital is the people you know and people you know through mutual friends. It can take a lifetime for people to establish good social capital and with good social capital, the more one can benefit from it. However, there are some places in particular that one is more adept to accumulate more social capital. Some of these places are college, parties, work, etc. The people you know can provide you with more resources, and the people they known can be quite resourceful, also. It is all about your social network and who you know that can be a great asset to one’s success.
Many people start building their social capital in school. College is a great place to meet new people who goals are similar to your own and that are trying to establish new relationships. Joining organizations and participating in college events, fundraisers, bake sales, passing out flyers, etc. can all help you meet new people who might have many new resources that one can benefit from. One organization that a lot of people look forward to joining when they come to college is fraternities/ sororities. Being in a fraternity/ sorority gives you the chance to meet a lot of people and gives you the opportunity of creating many great relationships with people. This gives a person the chance to meet all different types of people who will be willing to get to know you because you are in a Greek organization. In college, usually the most resourceful people tend to be the people who are part of a sorority/ fraternity. This is because they know so much about what’s going on in the college life and they have to socialize with many people in order to keep their Greek organization name out there and to create events that people can enjoy. I would say a person in a fraternity/ sorority has a lot of social capital and, with that, it can make them more successful in life. They have more options and having more options, people are willing to give them recommendations when it comes to finding a job once they graduate. It is all about who you know.
Social capital also is very beneficial when it comes to finding a good job or to getting a promotion. Knowing the right person can help you get into a job and can also put in a good recommendation for you. Knowing the right person can help you benefit from things that other cannot. An example would be a job may not be hiring, but because you know someone who works there, they can say something to their boss or hiring manager and can get you an interview or a job at that place. Knowing the right people can help you cut corners to getting things or information you may need.
The bigger you social circle is, the more resources you have and can obtain. Your social circle is your social capital. The more capital you have, the more things you can accomplish.
