What is wrong with the world we are living in and how is the history of sociology to blame? According to Sprague, the sociological canon in social theory is one that seems to be very biased in that it mainly consisted of white, capitalist men. A few of the men include the well-known sociologists Marx, Durkheim, and Weber. Granted, these were all highly intelligent men in their time. However, Sprague felt that a lot of the credit should not be placed on these white men and their accomplishments in the field of sociology. He felt that sociology needed to take more into account from those that are feminists as this could possibly have led to a different understanding of the world in which we live.
One of the major reasons why the canon is extremely biased is because it is taking leaving out the knowledge of those that may have understand our society even though they were not necessarily labeled sociologists. The biasness that is apparent in sociology also made me think of that which is in the media. It seems like every time I turn the news on, I always hear something about someone getting shot in the south side of Chicago or where the next terrorist attack is set to take place. I think the media that we view is also biased because it is set to appeal to certain audiences. I remember back in Soc 105 we had talked about how the media puts such horrific things on TV because they know that they are going to get millions of viewers watching their news casts.
In addition, the author mentions that poor analytic categories contribute to the idea of sociology being biased because it they promote conceptual uniqueness and the understanding of society’s ideas. I have been so engulfed in society’s ideas of what true news media is that I have gotten so fed up with how negative the news is that I do not even want to watch it anymore. I know that I probably should because it will keep me up to date on the world around me, but I do not want to get bogged down in the negativity too. The media has gotten me to the point to where I do not what to believe anymore. This is because I feel like they are just reporting on what they want viewers to see and what is actually true.
If the news is making me feel so negative, then I can just imagine what it is doing to our younger generations. I feel almost as if the media is just brain washing them into thinking something that is not true. With the prior example of the shootings on the south side of Chicago, they are usually saying that the suspect is of some type of minority decent. They are putting the idea that minorities are harmful and that the Caucasian children should fear them. We already have enough hatred going on in our society between different races, we do not the media honing in on the idea too.
In all, the news media that we receive on a daily basis are biased in what they report in just like those that were involved in the sociological canon. Once again, it seems like the actual truth is not getting out there for the public to see and comprehend. It is all just coming from the white, capitalist point of view. If this is the case, what is the future of our media going to look like? Are they are going to constantly show the minorities as negative people?
