The Fetish
Within Marx perspective on “The Fetishism of Commodities and the Secret There of” he depicts how properties or objects are being made to satisfy a person’s wants and needs. He also explains “the mode of production in which the product takes the form of a commodity, or is produced directly for exchange is the most general and most embryonic form of bourgeois production (Marx 74)”. The fact that objects are being produced; this may be an example of Marx definition of fetishism. Fetishism is when people have obsessions with objects that have been produced and are valuable or marketable. In society today, people may have a fetish due to the fact that the object may be costly whereas if it was cheaper, then it would be less wanted. Marx’s theory expresses “We will content ourselves with yet another example relation to the commodity-form. Could commodities themselves speak, they would say: Our use-value may be a thing that interest men. It is no part of us as objects, is our value. Our natural intercourse as commodities proves it in the eyes of each other we are nothing but exchange values (Marx 75).” Overall, in society objects are being exchanged and bought due to their value. Very high prices draw attraction to the buyers. Marx considers this as what he says “fetishism”.
In comparison to Marx’s on fetishism of commodities in society there are numerous amounts of products that are set at a very high price and are valuable. Famous brands such as Apple, Jordan, and Michael Khors are produced by labor and considered commodities and marketable items. For instance, Air Jordans are a very popular brand as far as shoes and people will go above and beyond to buy the shoes. However, not as many people attempt to buy Adidas shoes due to the value of the product along with the fame that comes with the name Jordan. Air Jordans are made by Nike which is a one of the “top of the line” shoes company. On many occasions Air Jordans have released numerous amounts of shoes every weekend. A large amount of people will stand in line outside of the store in any kind of weather. This occurs because the values of Air Jordans are very high compared to Adidas. If Adidas were to release shoes just as Nike released Air Jordans, Air Jordans would have a better sale. People would most likely buy these products due to social-self-esteem enhancement. Nike produces Air Jordans so Nike would be producing commodities because it has been proven that more people have a fetish for Air Jordans than Adidas shoes or gear in general.
There have been many cases where there have been brawls and people were even getting shot and killed over the shoes. According to the daily news there has been a sneak attack in release of the Nike Air Jordan Gamma Blue retro 11’s which caused several brawls in a shoe store. Joe Kemp, the author of this article in the Daily News, explains how these Air Jordan shoppers get out of hand for these brand new pair of sneakers. Instagram, a social media website, also shows clips of several fights that were all happening at once inside one store. Another similar incident that occurred according to Philip Caulfield, author for the Daily News, discusses that a Texas narcotic cop was being accused of stealing a suspected drug dealers Air Jordans. Caulfield explained that there was a raid going when officer Antoine Williams of the Fort Worth police department, snatched the suspected drug dealer, Marquis Green.
Air Jordans are very popular so when people buy them they may also sell them for a much larger price. Shoes are sold on Ebay for twice the price they were sold for in the store. Air Jordans are also exchanged for a newer pair or for money. This product will remain a widely known brand known to society and will continue to grow financially throughout the U.S as well as in other countries. They will grow more popular since they were named after the legend, superstar, and phenomenal athlete Michael Jordan. Another fact about his shoes is that they sale out in one day so people are in a rush to get them on the day they are released. Once they are sold out it is very hard to get another pair, and that is why people sale them at twice the original price on E-bay or any other website.
Overall, in society today, labored objects are becoming commodities due to the fact that the products are being made for satisfaction and set at a high value. These objects become property and sell for a marketable price. Objects are being made to satisfy society-self-esteem. Air Jordans were chosen as an example because they are the most famous name brand gym shoe compared to any other gym shoes being sold in the U.S or other countries.
