Time-space distantiation is a transformation of both time and space such that the near and far can be easily connected. With this, the meaning of time and space has no context and people who live on different parts of the world can be considered “closer” compared to someone who is their neighbor. There are many ways this is possible. Things such as cell phones, facebook, twitter, Skype and other different social networks allow people to have a “closer” relationship with someone who are countries away rather than someone who live in the same neighborhood.
For years now, cell phones become technological advanced every upcoming year. You can do anything with your phone and now days you can even start your car with your phone. “Watch a movie?” Just watch a movie on your phone; better yet rent a movie on your phone. Nevertheless, those are not the only things you can do with your phone. Certain social networks and apps you can download onto your phone such as Skype, Tango, Voxer, etc. allow people from anywhere in the world to talk, send video messages, and video chat with one another. “Your best friend moved?” You both can now be friends for life and see each other on an everyday basis. The same is possible with your significant other. This is also how long distance relationships have a higher chance at succeeding. This is how two people, one from Egypt and one from Canada, can communicate with each other on a regular basis.
The time-space distantiation does not just apply to friendships and social networks; I believe this also applies to government uses and education. For government uses, time-space distantiation allows government officials to have conference calls and important meetings via video chatting. This allows them to stay in contact with one another (other than talking on the phone), and keeping a well established political connection. In addition, this saves time with travel expenses and they do not have to always meet in person to discuss certain political issues and topics. When it comes to educational uses, time-space distantiation allows students to take online classes and to stay in contact with their professor, even though he/she may not be in the state or country. Students can chat with their professor via video chatting and/email and even though they may not physically be inside a classroom, they all can “meet up” via web.
Time-space distantiation allows people to be “closer” with a person who is farther away than a person who isn’t. Years ago, this was not possible due to the fact that technology was not as advanced as it is now or because it was non-existent. Usually, people were closer to those that were in their own community, but times have changed. People that are countries away can establish a greater relationship compared to two people that live next door to one another. This is how people stay in contact with each other and remain close for years. It has become easier to see a person face to face even if they are thousands of miles away.
